Brandon McKenzie is a Dallas-based artist whose minimal abstract landscapes explore the evolving relationship between people and the Earth. Born in Kansas and raised in Texas, his early practice was rooted in capturing the raw, open beauty of the near American West. These formative works laid the foundation for his ongoing investigation into how landscapes can be reinterpreted through abstraction and atmosphere.
In 2020, McKenzie launched his LS Series, a body of work that distills landscapes into pared-back, dreamlike compositions. Employing a restrained grey-scale palette, the series emphasizes rhythm, balance, and movement across the canvas, drawing attention to subtle shifts in tone and form. The works often incorporate elements of surrealism, allowing familiar terrain to feel at once recognizable and otherworldly.
Central to McKenzie’s process is the concept of the palimpsest - each painting is built through heavily layered stages, where every mark and erasure contributes to the final surface. This approach creates depth and resonance, encouraging viewers to sense the passage of time and the accumulation of memory within each work.
Through his abstract landscapes, McKenzie invites reflection on how we perceive, inhabit, and are shaped by the environments that surround us.
